Oaxaca, Mexico

Hey guys! It's me King again!

I am currently in Wales on a mission but right now I have a break so I wanted to update you on my recent adventure in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Oaxaca is a beautiful state in southern Mexico with an amazing view of the Pacific Ocean. It has many indigenous cultures and is also incredibly biologically diverse. I loved being able to see all of the different animals, and I must admit it was pretty hard not to chase all the different animals I saw! The coast was absolutely beautiful, and I loved being able to bask in the sun on the beach with all the tourists on my last day there.

I was called there last week to help locate a missing man, who we found, don't worry! After my day of searching and rescuing, really all I was wanting to do was circle around my dog bed three times to make it perfectly flat and squishy, and then lay down and chew on my favorite bone. I had hiked through the Oaxaca wilderness for hours on end, which was a lot, even for me! We also had to search through a goat farm, and I really couldn't wait to take a bath to get rid of the smell of goat!   It was very late by the time I had finished making sure the missing man was safe and receiving proper medical attention, and it was a Saturday night. As I was plodding back to my hotel, I noticed a group of drunk people come out of a bar. There were four girls and two boys, and they all were so intoxicated they could barely stand up.

Since I am a dog, I have an extremely heightened sense of smell. Suddenly, there was a smell even more powerful than the smell of alcohol emanating from the drunken group. The smell made my hackles raise. For those of you who do not know too much about dogs, our hackles are long hairs along our backs that stick straight up when we are frightened or angry! I was walking in the shadows since there weren't too many streetlights around, but with my also heightened night vision I noticed someone else lurking in the dark.

A man was hiding up ahead of the group, clearly lying in wait for them. I heard a sharp noise and smelled a sharp whiff of metal, and realized the man had just pulled out a knife. It didn't take long for me to realize his intentions. He was going to mug them!

I quickly sprang into action, running up to the group and barking frantically. They honestly were too drunk to even realize what was going on. The girls just started shrieking in glee and trying to pet me. I kept running forward to where the man was hiding, and started barking and growling at him. The sight of a snarling German Shepherd is pretty scary even to me, so it didn't take more than one quick threatening chomp of my jaws for him to abandon his mugging plan.

The man quickly dropped his knife and ran off! I was so happy I did my happy dance and did a quick howl! I scared him away and saved the group!! The drunk people were none the wiser though, still laughing and stumbling down the street. One of the guys had pulled out his hotel key, and I noticed it was a hotel that was right next to mine and just up the street from where we are.

I knew I had to protect these people since they were clearly incapable of protecting themselves. I patiently walked beside them all the way home, and only left when I was sure that they had made it inside safely.

FINALLY, I got back to my hotel, and after a bath, a total shake down, and three circles around my bed, I settled into my bed for the night with my bone. Man, it sure does feel good to be a dog!

Author's Note:

I made this story based off the myths of the Cadejos. The Cadejo is a mythological dog from southern Mexico and Central America that has two versions. The black Cadejo is traditionally evil, who kills men who try to kill them. The white Cadejo is the good one who protects drunks from robbers. Obviously, I based King off of the good white Cadejo. Technically, since protecting drunk people isn't your average search and rescue work, I decided to have King experience the story on the way home from his rescue. I had King notice the man trying to mug the group by sight and smell because as he said himself, dogs would be able to see, hear, and smell danger before humans could, especially drunk ones. I thought it would really showcase King's kindness and loyalty if the drunk people never even knew they were in danger or that he was really even there with them. Again I like to give some background on the country/region that King is in since each of his trips are to different parts of the world. I think it adds a little bit extra to the story to know where King is and what makes that place so special to the world!
